Leveraging The 4 Cs To Deliver Bioprocessing 4.0

By Vikas Revankar

Biomanufacturers are facing immense pressures to increase their productivity and deliver high-quality biotherapies to market faster. These manufacturers are looking to Bioprocessing 4.0 for more holistic solutions to their challenges as they work to evolve and create their facilities of the future.

As with advancements in process technologies, the digital ecosystem has leaped forward in its capabilities. It is here we see in practice Industry 4.0’s principles of interconnection, information transparency, decentralized decisions, and technical assistance.  These principles and their corollaries contribute to the design of a digital ecosystem partially available today and continuing to develop for the future.

As we apply these principles to the needs of biopharma manufacturers, we see a framework for a future manufacturing facility emerges. Our framework focuses on areas where a manufacturing facility will benefit the most – on the plant floor, where we control multiple unit operations and systems, then connect them across processes and facilities to centrally collect and enrich data allowing us smarter ways to continuously monitor and improve. Finally, we use this advanced knowledge to collaborate across organizations, partners, and end-users. Here then are our “4 Cs” of Biopharma 4.0 – the software, automation, and analytics tools that provide interconnection, information transparency, and decentralized decision making.
