Switch To A Nitrogen-Free Cryopreservation System

Some of the key considerations when purchasing equipment for laboratory operations are sustainability, re-usability, recyclability, and running costs. A product’s carbon emissions throughout its life cycle influence its overall environmental impact.

The focuses of this study are the carbon emissions and running costs related to cryopreservation equipment. A liquid nitrogen (LN2)-free controlled-rate freezer is compared with a typical liquid nitrogen-based system. Liquid nitrogen involves added infrastructure and therefore additional factors for expenditure, environmental impact, and potential challenges for cryopreservation scale-up.

The study explores the environmental implications of the use of liquid nitrogen for cell freezing. Carbon emissions during the manufacture, transportation, and operation of LN2-free controlled-rate freezers are compared with systems that use liquid nitrogen for cooling. Electrical consumption and running costs are also analyzed.
