While filters that are capable of removing 99.98% of particles of a particular size are considered high-performing, this may only apply to non-deformable particles and should not impact the filtration matrix. However, this level of performance is inadequate for critical filtration processes, as sterilizing-grade filters are necessary. A sterilizing-grade filter should produce sterile effluent when faced with 107 0.2 micron organisms per cm2 of filtration media. This definition of a sterilizing-grade filter mirrors that of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
